Photographer: Vuhlandes
Personal Background: Vuhlandes is an American photographer from West Side of Detroit, Michigan. The name Vuhlandes is actually his middle name. He grew up in a harsh neighborhood where he witnessed a lot of violence, drugs, and other sorts of crime. He has always had a passion for photography. On his website he states “No matter what I'm doing my life seems to revolve around my camera”.
Style: Vuhlandes doesn’t shy away from showing the harsh reality of growing up in Detroit. He also captures normal life in Detroit with urban/street photography. He has a very cinematic style with lots of greys and whites. He works with many artists and has done portraits for $uicideBoy$, Cdot Honcho, Baby Smoove, SosMula, Sada Baby, Lil Bibby, and many others. He has traveled all around the United States and has done a fair share of nature photography too. My favorites are his portraits and urban photography.
Philosophy: When Vuhlandes started photography he wanted to capture what he saw on Instagram. But after releasing Detroit isn't New York, Chicago or LA he decided to start photographing what is around him. He wants to show what he sees when he walks out of the door. He explains in an interview that this is what made him fall in love with photography. He wants to improve his city and show the true beauty of Detroit.
Influences: Vuhlandes has always been a fan of quality photography. He was going through slides and prints by a photographer named Dennis King. Dennis’ work inspired Vuhlandes to go out and buy his first camera. He would browse more photography on social media like Tumblr and Instagram. These images inspired him to start exploring his hometown of Detroit.

Compare and Contrast: I feel like Vuhlandes had better pictures, he has more experience. My images are very different because he took his sometime during the warmer months, and I took mine during the winter. Vuhlandes was able to get a better shot Heyden Food Store because there were no cars in the parking lot. I had to move my camera up a little to avoid having the cars in my shot. In the photo of the Five Star Car Wash, both images have grey overcast but the one I took has the added effect of snow. Vuhlandes’ style is similar to mine in which we both like to have a grey color in our photos with a cinematic look.
Artist Statement: I think the story that these images tell is the store of Detroit. Even though times seem to be tough there are still people here. They live their lives just like everyone else. They have entertainment at the Redford Theater and buy food at Heyden Food Store. Vuhlandes is shaping the image of Detroit with his photos by showing the reality of his city. Detroit is more than just some place on a map, it’s a city full of life and people, it has a story.
